CARLA’s Virtual Assessment Center (VAC) recently completed a major revision.

The VAC is a series of web-based learning modules that provides teachers with background information, step-by-step guidance, and many practical resources on developing proficiency-based second language assessments for the classroom. The VAC has been well used by teachers and teacher educators alike since it originally went online a decade ago. Last year alone, the VAC had 201,607 page views and 57,261 downloads of materials.

Now there is reason to visit the VAC again.  The text throughout the website has been updated, and new activities to help teachers reflect on the content of each learning module have been added.  Also new in the “Creating an Assessment Unit” module are video recordings of teachers discussing each step of the assessment development process. Each video has pre-viewing questions and post-viewing reflection exercises. The videos provide background information from experts in the field, and best of all, they showcase the experience of classroom teachers!

The Standards-Based Integrated Performance Assessment and Unit Overview resource section now includes over 50 examples of teacher-developed IPAs for a range of levels, contexts, and languages. The units are freely downloadable for use in the classroom.

The VAC update was led by Donna Clementi and facilitated by Marlene Johnshoy at CARLA. Dr. Clementi is a well-known consultant and national speaker on curriculum and assessment development and CARLA has been fortunate to have her as an advisor to the Assessment Project. She is currently a world language methods instructor at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin and leads the CARLA summer institute on Developing Assessments for the Second Language Classroom.
