In response to a national emphasis on language proficiency and global awareness, many elementary schools are establishing language programs in which the foreign language is used to teach students content area material such as mathematics and science. There is currently a lack of training programs which prepare elementary teachers to utilize the language as a means for instruction in the content areas.
This paper presents an innovative program which prepares teachers for work in immersion of partial immersion schools and describes the summer language experience designed to develop their proficiency. The model can be used by other institutions interested in preparing elementary school foreign language teachers.
