English as a Second Language

The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition has a keen interest in supporting the instruction of English language learners in a variety of settings: elementary and secondary classrooms, adult community education centers, and post-secondary institutions. CARLA, both directly through grant-funded projects and indirectly through the work of the faculty within the CARLA network, has engaged in initiatives to:

  • develop a teacher-directed model for improving instruction in mainstream elementary classes which have high proportions of English Language Learners;
  • improve English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction at the post-secondary and K-12 levels through a variety of professional development opportunities; and
  • create materials to support ESL instruction.

TEAM UP: Teaching English Language Learners Action Model to Unite Professionals
TEAM UP: Teaching English Language Learners Action Model to Unite Professionals is an innovative approach to teacher development. In order to address the academic progress of English language learners, a small number of participating schools have selected a team of six teachers (ESL and grade-level) and paraprofessionals that are collaborating with other teams to address issues of curriculum, instruction, and assessment of second language learners. At the same time, each educator is engaging in his/her own professional development through credit-bearing coursework and collaboration that fosters work across roles and within schools.

CARLA Summer Institutes for Language Teachers
Each summer CARLA offers a wide array of professional development opportunities for ESL language teachers working with students at the elementary and secondary schools, postsecondary institutions, and with adult ESL programs.

Conversations with Mainstream Teachers: What can we tell them about second language learning and teaching?
This handout gives research-based answers to some of the most common questions asked by non-ESL teachers about language learning and teaching. The presentation was given by Elaine Tarone and Diane Tedick for the MinneTESOL conference in St. Paul, MN on November 10, 2000.

English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) Teaching Technology Materials
CONNECTED! is an interactive manual for ESL/EFL teachers on the principles and practice in using technological resources to foster a communicative environment in the classroom. CONNECTED! won the ETS TOEFL Policy Council's Language Acquisition and Instruction Best New Product Award in 1999.
