Introduction to "The Sounds of Mandarin"

This series on the Sounds of Mandarin combines:

  • Pictures - from authentic materials used in China
  • Writing - pinyin, the official transcription system of the PRC
  • Sounds - 1,155 speeches recorded by a native speaker
  • Exercises/Exam - listening discrimination and transcription
  • Answers to Exercises - providing immediate feedback

This module has been developed by:

  • Dr. Pingwen Huang Ph.D. (Chinese Language and Literature), Central University for Nationalities & Visiting Scholar, Northern Illinois University
  • Assoc. Prof. Bei Huang Xi’an Foreign Language University
  • Professor John Hartmann, Department. Foreign Languages

Funding for the development of "The Sounds of Mandarin" was partially provided through a minigrant from the LCTL project at CARLA.

You can download the entire PowerPoint slide show, which includes 155 slides, sounds of all consonants and vowels, and exercises. To run this program, you need your own copy of PowerPoint, from Microsoft.

Please note that the PowerPoint file is large, 31.7 MB. It will take a while to download, even with the fastest net connection. To use a slow modem will be impossible.
