SPEAKING-RELATED WORK

Second Quarter First year Hindi.
(The activity takes place in the Computer Lab in two consecutive sessions. Student work in pairs.)
hi (available from here)
Task: Look at the picture and write up a story that happened sometime in the past. For homework you will have to prepare the story for oral presentation and present it to your classmates. At the end of the quarter the students go back and elaborate on their stories and perform again before the class.

Purpose: To create a meaningful environment for students prepare for speaking and reported speech with emphasis on perfect tense and the ergative construction (H. H. van Olphen's First Year, Part 2, pp 3-34). Delaying speech performance to build vocabulary and grammar competence.

Target: Grammar, vocabulary, writing and speaking skills.

(Note: Borrowing the idea from Language Lab practice, this year after the stories and glossaries were written up on the computers I asked the students to leave them on the screen along with the picture and to move to another pair's workstation. Still in pairs they were supposed to read and write in comments, questions or reactions to the other students' works. I found this idea useful because thus, the students got familiar with their peers' stories before the oral presentations and could offer and recieve some peer feedback which actually was very interesting. Another addition to what I have done in the previous years is that I will video tape the oral presentations. According to the student reactions to my suggestion, this was exciting and highly motivating. The way we will proceed is first they present without the camera on, and then a second time - the actual taping session.)

Stupid Man

Once upon a time there was a stupid man. His name was Prasad. He once took a pilgrimage to the Ganges River. A holy man said, "The Ganges River will remove all of your sins." Upon hearing this Prasad stole a cow. Next he ate meat. Prasad went to a temple and did not take off his shoes. After that Prasad returned to the Ganges. He started bathing in the river. The police came. The officer said, "I am going to arrest you." Prasad didn't understand. He thouhgt all his bad deeds would be forgiven.
