Welcome to a virtual Moscow!
You are a journalist whom his or her newspaper is sending to Russia to
write a feature article about the
contemporary Russian man. You have just arrived, and before going
to interview people, you want to get a sense of Russian masculinity by
doing some web-based research.

Process
You are about to go online and view a
few sites. There is a list of questions that interest you -- see them
below. То find the аnswers the questions,
read the texts and pay attention to the visual component of the sites.
Don't worry about understanding every word; instead, try to get a
general sense of what the texts say. Just in case, here is an
electronic dictionary for your trip: http://sunsite.nstu.nsk.su/rus/tutor/dict.
Your questions are as follows
(write down the responses on a sheet of paper and turn them in to your
instructor at the end of the lesson):
- What are the hobbies of the "real man" in Russia?
- Does appearance
matter for the Russian man? Why?
- What
is fashionable for men in
the 2004/2005 winter season in Russia? Is it masculine or with elements
of femininity? Cite an example, so that this will be easy to understand
for your readers.
- Are
there places to go in Moscow for a gay (homosexual) man?
What do gay Muscovites do in the evening? If there are any gay-friendly
clubs in Moscow, write down the phone number of one gay club that is
easy to get in, and one where it is difficult to get into.
- They
say that the Russian man is "the real man," with all the stereotypical
qualities. Is this so? What stereotypically
masculine qualities do Russian men have currently? Did they
acquire any stereotypically women's qualities? Which qualities?
